What do you think of when you hear the word formless? Perhaps a spill on the kitchen counter that spreads rapidly or the saying “it’s like nailing Jello to a tree”? Formless, by definition, means lacking a distinct shape, having no definite form or without the definition of clear lines or boundaries.

It’s hard to imagine an earth that was completely empty and formless, just open darkness void of life. Picture a dark, winter sky void of stars and moon and then imagine that darkness being all there is, engulfing existence. All there is, that is, except the Spirit of God who is hovering. God, our Creator, with a completely empty canvas, a heart full of love and the ability to bring forth anything He chooses, breathes in and then speaks out, “Let there be light” and…. there was light. God saw that the light was good and then Genesis 1:4 goes on to say something interesting, “and he separated the light from the dark.” In other words, He gave light definition, boundaries and form.

Take a few minutes to read the Creation account: Genesis 1:1 – 2:3

The Creator of the universe brought forth creation and He did so through a creative process; the Spirit was present and hovering, He formed and then He filled. In other words, He first had to shape and define the form before He could fill that form.

God had to form a sky before He could fill it with the sun, moon and stars. He had to form the sea before He could fill it with sea creatures. He had to form the land before He could fill it with vegetation. How much more so with us as His image bearers!

As a child of God and a follower of Jesus His Spirit not only hovers over the atmosphere but lives inside us, wooing us closer and closer to our Father and Creator and forming us more and more into His image. As He works in our life and in our heart to purge those things that are not of Him, He fills us with more and more Himself! He forms and He fills for His glory and our good.

Our Heavenly Father wants the pattern of our lives to mimic the life He sent as a pattern, Jesus. He forms us for purpose and fills us with purpose. Which is? To glorify Him and enjoy Him, to know Him and to make Him known.

What an amazing miracle! We are formed and filled by and with His perfection for life and life abundant! Every step with Him leads to His forming and His filling! May you experience restful trust as He shapes you into His design for YOU!
